The blast of emails Sunday night was actually related to an email outage that happened over the weekend. So all of the DM and New Follower emails were backed up and got released when the issue was cleared up Sunday evening. That doesn't mean there isn't a spam problem - there is! - but the email outage explains why everyone got so many of emails in a short period of time.
